Last Tuesday I walked out of the movie theater floored by what I consider the best work of philosophy in the past two decades. Have you ever wondered what would happen, if all the geniuses, artists, scientists, and most creative people in the world decided to actually change it? In the movie, Tomorrowland is an alternate world where in the 1964 worlds fair all the movers and shakers were recruited to live. Let me boil down philosophical premise into a sentence.

There are those people that have a vision of the future and go make it happen.

This is exactly what our nation needs to hear right now. The theory of definite optimism. We are either wallowing in the negative or dreaming of a bright future and doing nothing about it. You need to have both sides of the coin, the ability to dream optimistically AND the drive to go invent that dream. One quote from a character in the movie nails it:

In every moment there’s a possibility of a better future, but you people won’t believe it. And because you won’t believe it you won’t do what is necessary to make it a reality. – Nix

Let me explain precisely the importance of this quote. If you simply dream the world will be better indefinitely, you will probably go to a nice corporation, work 8-5, and create nothing new, because somebody out there will fix the world’s problems for you. No burden on you. This is what Peter Thiel in his book Zero to One calls the “indefinite optimist”, and is the reigning mindset of the millennial generation today. On the other hand, our future relies on the “definite optimist”. The individual who has a bright vision of the future and specific plans for bringing it to life. Thiel has a great graphic to put the four mindsets in our world into perspective.

As you can see, definite optimism was the United States during the time we landed a man on the moon. People have shunned that bright and definite future since then, and instead choose the other three mindsets. But I think it is time for the tides to turn. I have begun to see a readiness in my generation for dreamers to start doing.

Tomorrowland is a great step toward that future. A standing ovation for Disney to reject the forces of negativity spewed on us by the media. Go see Tomorrowland, and bring your kids. It is time for us to make a return to definite optimism and build the future we want to be a part of.
